Just recently I heard about the "Read to Lead" initiative teaming up with the Wisconsin State Parks. They're offering a reading program for kids ages 5 to 9 years old, that encourages their participants to read nature titles (from a provided list) and to visit the state parks throughout Wisconsin.
I have a great appreciation for our state parks and immediately took to the idea of a literacy program that encourages families to use and support their state parks.
The Waupaca Public Library's "Story Walk" is another great example of literacy and the great outdoors. More information about this project can be found on the YSS blog.
For (WI libraries) free brochures, bookmarks, and materials for this program you can contact Carrie A. Morgan at the Wisconsin DNR Eek! Enivronment Education for Kids.
